The two primary trenchless methods are CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) lining and pipe bursting. CIPP lining involves inserting a resin-saturated liner into the existing damaged pipe and inflating it against the pipe wall, where it cures to form a new, smooth pipe within the old one. It's ideal for pipes with cracks, root intrusion, and corrosion where the pipe still has its basic shape. Pipe bursting is used when the old pipe needs to be replaced entirely — a bursting head is pulled through the existing pipe, fracturing it outward while simultaneously pulling new HDPE pipe in behind it. Both methods require only small excavations at each end of the line, typically 2–4 feet square.
Root intrusion is the most common sewer problem in Southern California's established neighborhoods. Mature trees — ficus, eucalyptus, willow, and citrus — have aggressive root systems that seek out any moisture source, and older clay or cast iron sewer joints provide perfect entry points. In San Jacinto, Hemet, and Riverside County communities with trees that have been in the ground for 20–40 years, root-related sewer failures are extremely common. Trenchless repair allows us to rehabilitate the line without removing the trees or destroying root-covered landscaping.
Not every sewer line is a good candidate for trenchless repair. Severely collapsed pipe, pipe with major offset joints, or pipe with belly sections (low spots that collect debris) may require open-cut excavation to properly address. Our camera inspection process identifies the exact condition of your line so we can recommend the right approach honestly — even if that means recommending traditional excavation in cases where trenchless isn't the best solution.
Signs You Need Trenchless Sewer Now
- ✕Sewer backup — sewage coming up from floor drains, tubs, or toilets — indicating a serious blockage or collapse
- ✕Recurring root intrusion — the same line needs clearing every year or two despite prior repairs
- ✕Slow drains throughout the home simultaneously — main sewer line restriction
- ✕Sewage odor in the yard or around the foundation without a clear above-ground source
- ✕Sunken or soft soil running from the house toward the street over the sewer line path
- ✕Camera inspection has already confirmed cracking, root infiltration, or pipe corrosion
How Trenchless Sewer Works
We run a camera through the full length of the sewer line to document damage type, location, and severity — and confirm the pipe geometry is suitable for a trenchless approach.
Based on inspection findings we recommend CIPP lining, pipe bursting, or a hybrid approach — and explain clearly why one method fits your pipe's condition better than the other.
Roots are cut, debris is cleared, and the pipe walls are cleaned by hydro jetting to ensure the liner bonds fully or the bursting head travels cleanly through the line.
For CIPP, the resin liner is inserted and inflated to cure in place. For pipe bursting, the bursting head and new HDPE pipe are pulled through in a single operation from a small access point.
A final camera inspection confirms the repair is complete and the line flows correctly, then all access excavations are backfilled and the surface is restored.
What's Included with Trenchless Sewer
Pre-Repair Camera Inspection
Full sewer line video inspection to assess damage type, location, and the suitability of trenchless methods.
CIPP Pipe Lining
Cured-in-place pipe liner installed inside the existing damaged pipe — creates a new smooth pipe with a 50-year design life.
Pipe Bursting
Old pipe fractured and simultaneously replaced with new HDPE pipe, suitable for fully failed or severely damaged lines.
Root Cutting & Prep
Mechanical root clearing and pipe wall cleaning before lining to ensure liner adheres completely.
Post-Repair Camera Verification
Camera re-inspection after repair to confirm proper liner installation and full line clearance.
Access Point Restoration
Small excavation access points are backfilled, compacted, and surface-restored to original condition.

Common Questions About Trenchless Sewer Repair
How does CIPP pipe lining work?
A felt liner saturated with epoxy resin is inserted into the damaged pipe and inflated with air pressure against the pipe wall. The resin cures over several hours, forming a new, smooth, jointless pipe inside the old one. The new liner bonds to the existing pipe and has a design life of 50+ years.
Is trenchless sewer repair more expensive than traditional?
The direct repair cost can be similar or modestly higher. The real cost difference comes from what trenchless avoids: replacing landscaping, pavers, driveway concrete, and replanting mature vegetation. When those restoration costs are factored in, trenchless is almost always the better financial decision for landscaped properties.
Can CIPP lining handle tree root intrusion?
Yes — CIPP is excellent for root-intruded clay or cast iron pipes. We clear the roots mechanically first, then install the liner which creates a seamless, jointless pipe that roots cannot penetrate. It's one of the most effective long-term solutions for chronic root intrusion.
How long does trenchless sewer repair take?
CIPP lining is typically a one-day process. Pipe bursting is also usually completed in a single day. Both methods restore sewer function same-day, though CIPP requires a cure time before normal use.
